Anyone here play fighting games at all?
I am a competitive Tekken player myself, used to play Soul Caliber 2 heavily.
It doesn't matter if you just like to pick up a controller now and then and mash out some moves with a friend or are a random arcade/console scrub or you go to tournaments, make friends and enjoy the scene.
Post up! I just want to know if anyone else here enjoys thinking fast and hitting faster.
I've always been partial to turn-based games, myself. I like to sit and think...stew over my moves...dwell on them all day. Gives me something to do. (laughing)
Truthfully, I've always just felt that real-time games don't have the same strategic importance that turn-based ones do. Not that real-time can't be strategic...but by it's definition, it can't be AS strategic. And it's definitely a different KIND of strategy, as well.
And don't get me started on gather-and-build games - the worst!
I like turn-based for the same reason.
Fighting games are more like speed chess, and there is also actual skill involved where a game like forces is more about considering every angle and option over a broad scale while doing the same in regards to an opponent.
In Tekken if I manage to out-space an opponent and he whiffs a move I get a combo, while doing the combo (which can have many inputs and rely on strict timing) I consider how to end it.
Maybe I send him flying and come running in to force the opponent to guess what I am going to do (if he's wrong, it can be painful) or maybe knock them right down in front of me so he has to choose how to get up, and that can be tricky too.
All that happens in the span of 2-4 seconds and you are deciding what you are going to do for the next 2-4 seconds after that while paying attention solely on them and reacting quickly to what they do.
I enjoy both for different reasons. Turn-based allows you time to look at everything and make educated guesses what a smart opponent will do, your plan of attack, and your exit strategy.
Fighting games force you to think at lighting speed and act without hesitation, if you cannot react in 1/10 of a second you are too slow. You don't have an exit strategy, you only have movement and defense. You can make an educated guess about what a smart opponent will do, but it doesn't matter if you cannot react.
Forces has an undo button, which is nice. Tthe mixups and speed of fighting games have the sudden finality one would find in combat without the regrettable parts. There is no undo, only a chance at redemption.
That and I really enjoy tournaments, nothing like the thrill of win or STFD if you ask me.
