interesting...

I like the idea.  I've played quite a few games against, or teamed up with, certain players.  I find that there are certain opponants that I have developed a lot of respect for.  Clans, I believe, would promote more of a community.

I wonder, aside from simple affiliation, would the clans offer any additional functionality? For example, the ability to have clan tournaments, rankings, and "prestige" (titles, awards, etc).  It would be nice for two clans to initiate an inter-clan tournament without having to get outside approval (ex. the Forces dev./mgmt. team).

What say you all?

maybe offer the ability to challenge other clans, creating a game automatically and allowing the clan to fill it in from their rosters, blocking the public from joining it. Instead of a private game which requires passwords and such, this would just allow the clans to join without entering anything.

Maybe this is obvious, but some mechanism to encourage clans to spread talent so you don't end up with one clan with all the top players.

Perhaps something related to the Elo scoring system, so clans with a large number of high score players gain less in victory and suffer more in defeat?  That allows people who really want to be in the same clan to do so, whilst at the same time encouraging others to split off and form their own clan.

The key here is that even those not playing in a particular game would affect the score outcome.  Or is that just too unfair?

Or maybe a seperate score for clan play?

Two scores from each clan game.  One being a personal score that follows the existing Elo system in team games.  The other being a score that determines the ranking of the clans.

Personal score

So if a clan forms with say the top 10 players in it, those players won't get many personal score points for winning a clan game (as they'll by definition be playing people below them).  If they lose, they'll take a large hit :> .

Clan score

Two ideas:

1.  Based on the players playing

If that top 10 players clan win a clan game, because they've been fighting lower ranked players (important:  the ranking of the clan they were fighting is not important in this system), their clan won't get many points either.

The biggest problem that I can see with this system is that it is clearly unfair on a basic level.  After all, if a clan always wins, it should be the top clan, but under this system it might not be.  However, this unfair situation only occurs if that clan has a disproportionate number of top players.

2.  Based on the clan membership

The clan gains/loses points based on the ranking of it's entire membership and not just those that played.

Advantage is that this really encourages clans to keep lower ranked players on the books.  Disadvantage is that it's in the clan's interest to recruit lots of newbies but not to let them play.

That would be the best way I think, because it would keep the clans playing their best, and would not skew results. As you stated, all a few top players would have to do is keep a bunch of sub 10k players on the books, and rake in clan points. I think it should be based upon your personal points, if they do this at all.

my thoughts on clan rankings:

*note: I'm assuming that there are multiple forms of inter-clan competition such as -

1) Single battle, 2 team (clan A vs clan B), 6 players (3 per team)

2) Single battle, 3 team (A vs B vs C), X number of players per team.

3) 3 consecutive battles (diff. maps), X number of teams, X players/team.

4) X number of consecutive battles (different clan members in each using same or different maps), X teams, X players/team...

Rankings calulated as follows:

(for a single battle, clan ranking elements only)

- sum of ELO values for players on team = team's ranking base value ("RBV X")

- Ranking base values are used to calculate score as if they were individual players (via a system similar to ELO).

- The resulting scores are added to/subtracted from clan ranking value.

I know that this couldn't actually use an ELO calculation because the ELO system is a zero-sum calculation (meaning, every point lost by someone is gained by another and the only time "new" points enter the circuit is when a new player joins the ranking board) and ELO uses player rank to determine how many points should be lost/gained... altogether far too complicated for me to bother to figure out in detail.  But heck, I can be lazy and leave all the math to someone else and still feel like I made a contribution to this discussion so...

ok I'm done now
