POLL - Next Tourny

So I was thinking... After the success of DocBrown's first tourny (A&A 5 player Round Robin) I was think about hosting another tourny. One where there can be an actual victor, perhaps one where your teammates won't have as large an impact on your score as you will.

So, what should we do? I've got a couple ideas that I will throw out here and want votes on. But I won't limit the replies here to votes only, I would also like suggestions or ideas of your own. Perhaps there's something radical I have overlooked. Either way, give me your two cents on anything here.

Possible ideas for the next tourny:

1) 1v1 Africa, 20 competitors, Swiss style, 2/3 games, loser is done, winner moves on?

2) 2v2 Africa, 10 teams, Swiss style, 2/3 games, losers are done, winners move on?

3) 10 player free for all on World Map, auto deploy, first player to win TWO games wins, no limit to number of games.

4) 2v2 Random Map, 10 Teams, Swiss Style, 2/3 games, each round is a different map for the duration of the 2/3 games. (IE: Round 1 = Africa, Round 2 = Indian Ocean, Round 3 = World Map, then rinse/repeat.

5) MASSIVE Tourny!!! World Map, 10 Players. Free for all, top 3 people from each game move onto next round. This would require 30+ people to play correctly.

6) Swiss Style, Single Elimination, 5-player Indian Ocean games. 25 player tourny. 5x 5-player games, 1 winner from each game goes onto Round 2, winner of that 5-player all winners game wins the tourny.

7) Heads-Up World Champion! The victor must prove his worth through every map (except Hex) on BattleForces. This would be a 1v1, 2/3 game, swiss style tourny. Each round the map would change. Much like option #4, but 1v1 instead of teams. Winner moves on, loser drops. With 16 players, there would be 8 games of Africa in the first round, 4 games of Indian Ocean in the second round, and 2 games of World map. With 1 final round of World map for the final two people. We could also do this with many more people (IE: 32 people first round, 16 people second round, 8 people third round, 4 people 4th round, 2 people 5th round. Could be Africa > Indian > World > Indian > Africa). We could also just make it 1v1 World map the entire time.

Pros/Cons of each listed:

1) Very basic tourny, could be dry...

2) Pretty basic like #1, but adds another element in team-play.

3) Has potential to be very fun. However, these games could take FOREVER both in length of a single game, and the fact that we could have to play 10 or more of these games to find a victor. Players would gang up on someone who has 1 win already to eliminate them then repeat the process next game to the new victor. This would be a very cutt-throat tourny with a LOT of diplomacy going on...

4) Basic like the first two, but adds some random element of playing on different maps.

5) This would require a LARGE number of peopl (30-40) and would take awhile. However, the single-elimination paired with each game's top-contenders squaring off against eachother could be fun.

6) Very easy to pull off, would require little effort to keep track/control. I'd be wary of diplomacy turning the tables in this tourny though.

7) Very complicated, but could be worth it.

I'd like to point out that a Swiss-style tourny could be hard to manage since everyone would have to wait until all games are finished each round before the new pairings are listed. This is managable, but would have to be a smaller, 10 or so player tourny.

Thoughts? Ideas? Comments? Which tourny would you vote for or play in personally?

I planned to propose another tournament as soon as the current AA one is over.   My thought was to run a heads up tournament, either single or double elimination, with a rotating map by round (round 1 Indian ocean, round 2 World map, etc).  The only map I would not do for this is the Africa because between good players this map is purely luck based on initial placement.  This could be negated by manual land zone picking but figured for the ease of running the tournament didn't want to go there.  I would include the hex map, I've played a HU hex game and it went just fine.  I did manual land zone picking in that one though so not sure what the automatic land placements would be for a HU game on the hex map.  That would need to be tested before running it for a tournament obv, as I've already seen a problem with placement in the non-standard hex games.

That was my idea anyway... what do you think?

to try the next heads up tourn.so sign me up whoever runs it.i would also be unterested in a team tourn.one that we can choose our teammates.

I like the idea of a team tourny with us all picking our teammates and you keep the same teammate until the end.  Although, I know this is not what jeeter intended so he is probably against it.

Out of the list he created though I like number 7 the best.

then tourney 3 as a solo heads up, but whatever... like all the options.

I like the idea of a team tournament with fixed teams.  I'd propose that it work in the following way:

Each pairing is best 2 of 3.  Either all games are on Indian Ocean (IO), or the first two games are IO and Standard World (SW).  In the later case, if the pairing splits the first two, they play a 3rd game on Africa.  All games are Distributed territories and 1 infantry per territory.

I would run the tournament one of three ways:

1) Round robin for initial round with 4 top players going to playoff brackets.

2) Double elimination brackets with initial seeding based on the combined player rankings.

3) Swiss style tournament with 4 top players going to playoff brackets.

Any game in which a player deadbeats will be immediately counted as a loss for the team with the deabeating player.

I'd love to run another tournament, though if someone else really wants to take a hand at running one, I should probably let him take a turn since I did the first one.  On the other hand, there's nothing to say we can't have more than 1 tournament going on at a time.  If we do elimination-style (or swiss-style) tournaments, each team would need to have 2 games per tournament at any given time (since each pairing is best 2 of 3 and you won't know your next pairing until the current one is finished.

Doc, you are free to run whatever you'd like. I was opening this post to spark ideas more than anything.

I actually enjoy your idea. 2v2, 2/3 games, SINGLE elimination, game 1 and game 2 on Indian Ocean with the third and final game being on the world map.

Would be pretty easy to run to. Everyone signs up for their teams, there is no limit, any number will work, even if there is an odd number. There could just be "byes." And none of that round robin bullshit. Single elimination, winner moves on, loser waits until next turny. Thats also a plus to this tourny, would be super fast.

Have at it!

I really like the idea of double elimination so that teams will be assured of at least two pairings.  I realize it means more games, but to be honest, it primarily just means more work for the tournament organizer than anything else.  I understand wanting to get it over with quickly, but the double elimination allows for a better determination of 2nd place.  If the two best teams face off early, the second best ends up finishing far worse than they should.  But then, I like epic tournaments with large numbers of games! :)  I think double wouldn't take too long either, except possibly in waiting for the final round.  Effectively, it just adds one round to the tournament, which shouldn't slow it down appreciably, and it should be more fun for everyone.

I think that's a good call with the first two games on IO and a tie breaker on world map.  Right now it looks like I'm not going to end up in the finals of the A&A tournament, so once that gets underway I may try to finalize something along these lines and get another tourney started.

whos going to do it and what are they gonna do?i want into the next tourn.

I have no problem with whoever wants to run the next tourny.  I would like to be in it, but I don't have the time to run one myself.

j35t3r's picture

True. It would also eliminate all the: "Oh, thats a bullshit setup, we got screwed" arguments.

Double elimination really adds to the confusion when you're trying to keep track of the standings in the public view, you may have it written out on a piece of paper at home, but showing the ladder/pairings/standings on this site is pretty hard.

Regardless of single or double elimination, I don't want to be part of another Round-robin tourny unless its less than 10 people. It it way too many games and becomes boring.

I'll back you on whatever tourny you wanna run however. Good idea on the finals btw, you can start working on tourny early.

Agree, would be a miracle on this site.   But you could use a site like www.bracketmaker.com.  I've used them to run tournaments before, it's easy to update and then people can view the current brackets via a link posted here.
